DANCE STYLE DEFINITIONS

Jazz: This style often uses lively, bold, dramatic body movements, including body isolations and contractions. This type of dance is very fun and energetic. It is typically paired with upbeat music to add a theatrical flair. These dances usually have quick footsteps with lots of leaps and turns.

Broadway Jazz: This style emphasises performance and characterisation skills adapting to the needs of the theatre. It remains true to its original style - a dance from musical theatre repertoire. A major difference from traditional jazz dance is the ability for acting and portraying the character or situation.

Commercial Jazz: This style features a mixture of sharp and fluid movements with animated expression similar to dances seen on commercial video clips, television and film. This stylized choreography is often influenced by street funk, hip hop and pop dance styles.

Classical Ballet: The movement emphasizes graceful expressions and technical Classical choreography. This style should be danced to classical music however lyrical music is accepted. Must be executed in ballet or pointe shoes.

Neo Classical: This style is an evolution of classical ballet with movements that are faster and more urgent, with less emphasis on symmetry. The choreography is not as traditional as classical and opens to modern techniques and ideas.

Contemporary: This style allows the dancer creative freedom, and can be danced to a variety of different music which is often contemporary or experimental in nature. The choreography usually presents abstract concepts and concentrates on the movements of contraction and release.

Tap: Dancers use their feet like drums to create rhythmic patterns and timely beats. Tap dance is characterized by the creation of percussive choreography using tap shoes by striking on the floor in accordance with the dancing music.

Song and Dance / Song and Tap: This style is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The choreography usually communicates a story and the emotional content of a musical.

Hip Hop: This style of dance infuses hip-hop street culture with styles such as breaking, popping and locking and is typically danced to hip hop or rap music. The choreography is generally very energetic and allows the dancer to have freedom of movement within the routine and incorporate their personalities.

Lyrical: This dance style extends away from the strict rules of classical ballet, focusing instead on the expression of inner feelings. It emphasizes creativity in choreography and performance. Selected music should incorporate powerful lyrics that allow dancers to express themselves through a range of emotions.

Acrobatics: This style is defined by its athletic character, unique choreography, flexibility, balance, strength, muscular control, discipline and concentration. The choreography should demonstrate physical skills incorporating influences from gymnastics and tricks such as somersaults, cartwheels, head stands, backbends, walkovers and aerials.

Own Choreography: This can be any style but must be choreographed by the dancer

Open Style: This can be any style dance, can not be a repeat dance from another section in the same event
